Hossein Alizâdeh is a renowned Iranian composer and musician who has made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Born on February 22, 1951, in Tehran, Iran, Alizâdeh grew up in a family of musicians. His father, Ali Akbar Shahnazi, was a famous musician and composer, and his mother, Iran Shahrzad, was a singer. Alizâdeh's uncle, Houshang Zarif, was also a prominent musician and composer. Alizâdeh began his musical training at a young age, studying the tar, a traditional Iranian stringed instrument, under the guidance of his father. He later studied the setar, another traditional Iranian stringed instrument, with master musician Jalal Zolfonun. Alizâdeh's musical education also included studying Western classical music at the National Conservatory in Tehran. In the 1970s, Alizâdeh became a member of the National Orchestra of Iran, where he played the tar and setar. He also began composing his own music, drawing on both traditional Iranian music and Western classical music. Alizâdeh's compositions often incorporate elements of improvisation, and he is known for his use of complex rhythms and intricate melodies. One of Alizâdeh's most famous works is the album "Raz-O-Niaz," which he recorded with the vocalist Mohammad Reza Shajarian in 1978. The album features traditional Iranian music, including classical Persian poetry set to music. "Raz-O-Niaz" is considered a masterpiece of Iranian music and has been widely praised for its beauty and emotional depth. In the 1980s, Alizâdeh began to focus more on composing and teaching. He founded the Aref Ensemble, a group of musicians dedicated to performing and promoting traditional Iranian music. Alizâdeh also began teaching at the Tehran Conservatory of Music, where he helped to develop a new curriculum for the study of traditional Iranian music. In the 1990s, Alizâdeh began to gain international recognition for his work. He performed at major music festivals around the world, including the Edinburgh International Festival and the WOMAD festival in England. Alizâdeh also collaborated with Western musicians, including the Kronos Quartet and the Italian composer Ludovico Einaudi. One of Alizâdeh's most notable works from this period is the album "Endless Vision," which he recorded with the Iranian vocalist Shahram Nazeri in 1992. The album features traditional Iranian music, including classical Persian poetry set to music. "Endless Vision" is considered a landmark in Iranian music and has been widely praised for its innovative approach to traditional Iranian music. In the 2000s, Alizâdeh continued to compose and perform, and he also became involved in music education. He founded the Hamnavaz Institute for Music and Culture, which provides music education and training to young musicians in Iran. Alizâdeh also served as the director of the National Orchestra of Iran from 2003 to 2006. One of Alizâdeh's most recent works is the album "Sallaneh," which he recorded with the Iranian vocalist Salar Aghili in 2011.
