Marilyn Dubow was born on August 22, 1945, in New York City. She grew up in a family of musicians, with her father being a violinist and her mother a pianist. At the age of four, Marilyn began playing the violin, and by the age of six, she was already performing in public. Marilyn's talent was recognized early on, and she was accepted into the Juilliard School of Music at the age of ten. She studied under the renowned violinist Ivan Galamian, who was known for his strict teaching methods. Marilyn thrived under his guidance and quickly became one of his star pupils. In 1962, Marilyn won the prestigious Leventritt Competition, which launched her career as a soloist. She went on to perform with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. Marilyn was known for her technical brilliance and her ability to convey emotion through her playing. She was particularly admired for her interpretations of the works of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven. Her performances were always highly anticipated, and she was often praised for her ability to connect with her audience. In addition to her solo career, Marilyn was also a dedicated chamber musician. She was a founding member of the Dubow-Weiss Duo, which performed extensively throughout the United States and Europe. She also collaborated with many other musicians, including the pianist Emanuel Ax and the cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Throughout her career, Marilyn received many awards and honors. In addition to the Leventritt Competition, she won the Naumburg International Violin Competition and the Young Concert Artists International Auditions. She was also a recipient of the Avery Fisher Prize, which is considered one of the most prestigious awards in classical music. Despite her success, Marilyn remained humble and dedicated to her craft. She continued to practice for hours every day, always striving to improve her technique and interpretation. She was also a passionate teacher, and many of her students went on to have successful careers in music. Marilyn's career was tragically cut short when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1990. She underwent treatment and continued to perform, but her health deteriorated rapidly. She passed away on December 30, 1991, at the age of 46. Marilyn Dubow was a true virtuoso and a beloved figure in the world of classical music. Her legacy lives on through her recordings and the many musicians she inspired. She will always be remembered as one of the greatest violinists of her generation.
