DenmarkBirth:1930 in DenmarkDeath:2002 in Växjö, SwedenPeriod:ContemporaryGenre:Avant-GardeJørgen Plaetner was a Danish composer who lived from 1924 to 2002. He was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, and grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a composer and his mother was a pianist, so it was natural for him to be interested in music from a young age. Plaetner began his musical education at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, where he studied composition with Knud Jeppesen and piano with Victor Schiøler. He graduated in 1948 and went on to study in Paris with Nadia Boulanger, one of the most influential composition teachers of the 20th century. Plaetner's early works were influenced by the neoclassical style of Stravinsky and the French composers of the early 20th century. His first major work, the Symphony No. 1, was premiered in 1952 and received critical acclaim. The symphony is characterized by its use of polytonality and complex rhythms, and it shows Plaetner's mastery of orchestration. In the 1950s and 1960s, Plaetner continued to compose works for orchestra, including the Symphony No. 2 and the Concerto for Orchestra. He also wrote chamber music, including string quartets and sonatas for various instruments. His music during this period was characterized by its use of serialism and atonality, which were popular among avant-garde composers at the time. In the 1970s, Plaetner's style began to change. He became interested in incorporating elements of Danish folk music into his compositions, and he began to use tonality more frequently. His Symphony No. 3, which was premiered in 1975, is a good example of this new style. The symphony is based on a Danish folk tune, and it features lush harmonies and a more accessible style than his earlier works. Plaetner continued to compose throughout the 1980s and 1990s, and his later works show a continued interest in tonality and folk music. He wrote several works for choir, including the oratorio "The Creation" and the cantata "The Four Seasons." He also wrote several works for solo piano, including the "Danish Suite" and the "Sonata for Piano." Plaetner's music has been performed by orchestras and ensembles around the world, and he is considered one of Denmark's most important composers of the 20th century. His music is characterized by its complexity and its use of polytonality and atonality, as well as its incorporation of Danish folk music. His later works show a continued interest in tonality and accessibility, making his music more approachable for audiences. In addition to his work as a composer, Plaetner was also a respected music educator. He taught at the Royal Danish Academy of Music for many years, and he was a mentor to several generations of Danish composers. He was also a member of the Danish Composers' Society and the International Society for Contemporary Music. Jørgen Plaetner died in 2002 at the age of 78. His legacy as a composer and educator lives on, and his music continues to be performed and studied by musicians around the world.More....
