The Philip Jones Ensemble was a renowned classical music ensemble that was founded in 1951 by the British trumpeter Philip Jones. The ensemble was known for its unique sound and innovative approach to classical music, which helped to establish it as one of the most important ensembles of its time. Philip Jones was born in Bath, England in 1928 and began playing the trumpet at a young age. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London and later became a member of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1951, Jones founded the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, which later became known as the Philip Jones Ensemble. The ensemble was made up of some of the most talented brass players in the world, including Philip Jones on trumpet, John Iveson on trumpet, James Watson on trumpet, John Fletcher on horn, Roger Brenner on trombone, and John Jenkins on tuba. The ensemble was known for its unique sound, which was characterized by its use of modern brass instruments and its innovative approach to classical music. One of the highlights of the Philip Jones Ensemble's career was its performance at the 1957 Edinburgh Festival, where it received critical acclaim for its performance of works by Bach, Handel, and Purcell. The ensemble also performed at the Royal Festival Hall in London and at the Proms, where it became a regular fixture. In addition to its performances, the Philip Jones Ensemble also recorded extensively, releasing over 70 albums during its career. Some of its most notable recordings include "Music for Brass Ensemble" and "The Modern Brass Ensemble." The ensemble also received numerous awards and accolades throughout its career, including the Queen's Award for Export Achievement in 1977 and the Gramophone Award for Best Chamber Music Recording in 1986. Despite its success, the Philip Jones Ensemble disbanded in 1986 due to financial difficulties. However, its legacy lives on, and it remains one of the most important classical music ensembles of the 20th century. Its innovative approach to classical music and its unique sound continue to inspire musicians and audiences alike.
