Ensemble Symposium is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2012 by a group of talented musicians who shared a passion for chamber music. The ensemble is based in New York City and is known for its innovative programming and dynamic performances. The founding members of Ensemble Symposium were violinist Sarah Whitney, violist Jessica Meyer, cellist Michael Katz, and pianist Liza Stepanova. All four musicians had extensive experience performing as soloists and chamber musicians, and they were eager to collaborate on a new project that would allow them to explore the rich repertoire of chamber music. From the beginning, Ensemble Symposium was committed to presenting a diverse range of music, from the classical canon to contemporary works. The ensemble's programming often features lesser-known composers and works that are rarely performed, as well as new compositions by living composers. One of the highlights of Ensemble Symposium's early years was their performance at the 2013 Chelsea Music Festival in New York City. The festival, which celebrates music, art, and food, featured Ensemble Symposium in a program of works by Mozart, Brahms, and contemporary composer David Ludwig. In 2014, Ensemble Symposium was invited to perform at the prestigious Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts in Katonah, New York. The ensemble presented a program of works by Schumann, Brahms, and contemporary composer Missy Mazzoli, which was well-received by the audience and critics alike. Over the years, Ensemble Symposium has continued to perform at major venues and festivals throughout the United States, including the Ravinia Festival in Illinois, the Music in the Mountains Festival in Colorado, and the Newport Music Festival in Rhode Island. In addition to their live performances, Ensemble Symposium has also released several recordings, including their debut album, "Echoes of Mozart," which features works by Mozart and his contemporaries. The album received critical acclaim and was praised for its "impeccable musicianship" and "sensitive interpretations." Ensemble Symposium has also been recognized for their commitment to education and outreach. The ensemble has presented masterclasses and workshops at schools and universities throughout the United States, and they have worked with organizations such as the New York Philharmonic's Very Young Composers program to inspire the next generation of musicians. In 2019, Ensemble Symposium was awarded the Chamber Music America Residency Partnership Grant, which allowed the ensemble to collaborate with the New York City-based dance company, BalletCollective. The resulting performance, "What Comes Next," featured new works by composer Ellis Ludwig-Leone and choreographer Troy Schumacher, and was hailed as a "triumph of collaboration" by critics. Today, Ensemble Symposium continues to push the boundaries of classical music, presenting innovative programs and collaborating with artists from a variety of disciplines. The ensemble's commitment to excellence and their passion for chamber music have made them one of the most exciting and dynamic ensembles in the United States.More....
