Role:ComposerBirth:1858Death:1904Period:RomanticGenre:ChamberDaniel Van Goens was a French composer and violinist who lived from 12 June 1858 to 9 June 1904. He was born in Paris, France, to a family of musicians. His father, Henri Van Goens, was a violinist and conductor, and his mother, Marie-Antoinette, was a pianist. Daniel Van Goens showed an early interest in music and began studying the violin at a young age. Van Goens studied at the Paris Conservatory, where he was a student of Jules Massenet and Henri Vieuxtemps. He won several prizes for his compositions, including the Prix de Rome in 1881 for his cantata "Le Retour de Tobie." This prize allowed him to study in Rome for three years, where he continued to compose and perform. Van Goens was a prolific composer, and his works include orchestral pieces, chamber music, and songs. He was particularly known for his violin compositions, which were often performed by himself and other prominent violinists of the time. His most famous work is his "Concerto for Violin and Orchestra," which was premiered in 1894 and remains a popular piece in the violin repertoire. In addition to his compositions, Van Goens was also a respected violinist. He performed in many concerts throughout Europe and was known for his virtuosic playing. He was also a teacher, and his students included the violinist Jacques Thibaud. Van Goens died in Paris in 1904 at the age of 45. Despite his relatively short life, he left behind a significant body of work that continues to be performed and admired today. His music is characterized by its lyricism and technical virtuosity, and it remains an important part of the classical music canon.More....
