He was born on December 12, 1724, in Forlì, Italy, to a family of musicians. His father, Giuseppe Cirri, was a cellist and composer, and his brother, Ignazio Cirri, was also a cellist and composer. Giovanni Battista Cirri began his musical education at a young age, studying the cello with his father. He quickly showed great talent and was soon performing in public concerts. In 1742, he joined the orchestra of the Duke of Parma, where he played alongside his brother Ignazio. In 1749, Giovanni Battista Cirri moved to London, where he quickly established himself as a prominent cellist and composer. He performed in many concerts and became a member of the orchestra at the King's Theatre. He also taught the cello to many students, including the famous cellist and composer Luigi Boccherini. Cirri's compositions were highly regarded during his lifetime, and he was known for his skillful use of the cello in his works. He wrote many sonatas for cello and basso continuo, as well as concertos and chamber music. His music was characterized by its elegance and lyricism, and he was considered one of the leading composers of his time. One of Cirri's most famous works is his Sonata in D major for cello and basso continuo, which is still performed today. The piece is notable for its beautiful melodies and virtuosic cello writing. Another notable work is his Concerto for cello and orchestra in G major, which showcases the cello's range and expressive capabilities. In addition to his work as a composer and performer, Giovanni Battista Cirri was also a respected music teacher. He taught the cello to many students, including his own son, Giuseppe Cirri, who became a prominent cellist and composer in his own right. Giovanni Battista Cirri died on June 11, 1808, in London, at the age of 83. His legacy as a composer and cellist continues to be celebrated today, and his music remains an important part of the classical music repertoire.More....
