Michael Heltau is a renowned Austrian actor, singer, and director who has made a significant contribution to the world of classical music. Born on July 24, 1933, in Timișoara, Romania, Heltau grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a conductor, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Heltau showed a keen interest in music and began taking piano lessons at the age of six. Heltau's family moved to Vienna when he was ten years old, and he continued his music education at the Vienna Music Academy. He studied piano, singing, and acting and graduated with a degree in music and drama. Heltau's talent as a singer and actor was evident from an early age, and he began performing in various productions in Vienna. In 1956, Heltau made his debut as a singer at the Vienna State Opera, where he performed in Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro." He quickly gained recognition for his powerful voice and dynamic stage presence, and he went on to perform in many other operas and concerts throughout Europe. In addition to his work as a singer, Heltau also pursued a successful career as an actor. He appeared in numerous films and television shows, including the popular German TV series "Tatort." Heltau also worked as a director, staging productions of operas and plays in Austria and Germany. One of Heltau's most significant achievements was his portrayal of the character of Emile in the musical "South Pacific." He performed the role in Vienna, Berlin, and London, and his performance was widely praised by critics and audiences alike. Heltau's rendition of the song "Some Enchanted Evening" became a classic and is still remembered as one of the most beautiful interpretations of the song. Heltau's other notable performances include his portrayal of Don Giovanni in Mozart's opera of the same name, the title role in Verdi's "Rigoletto," and the role of Scarpia in Puccini's "Tosca." He also performed in many concerts and recitals, showcasing his versatility as a singer and his deep understanding of classical music. Throughout his career, Heltau received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the arts. In 1983, he was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art, and in 1993, he was awarded the Golden Medal of Honor for Services to the City of Vienna. Heltau was also made an honorary member of the Vienna State Opera in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the institution. Despite his many achievements, Heltau remained humble and dedicated to his craft. He continued to perform and direct well into his seventies, and his passion for music and the arts never waned. Heltau passed away on July 14, 2020, at the age of 86, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and inspiration for generations to come.
