Christa Landon was a renowned classical music artist who made significant contributions to the world of music as a performer, scholar, and editor. Born on December 21, 1921, in Berlin, Germany, Landon showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. Her parents recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Landon's family moved to Switzerland in 1933, where she continued her music education. She studied piano with Walter Frey and composition with Paul Müller-Zürich at the Zurich Conservatory. In 1940, Landon moved to Basel to study musicology at the University of Basel. She completed her doctoral thesis on the music of Johann Sebastian Bach in 1949, which was later published as a book titled "Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier: A Study in Musical Interpretation." Landon's scholarly work on Bach's music earned her international recognition and established her as a leading authority on the composer. She was invited to give lectures and masterclasses on Bach's music at universities and music schools around the world. In addition to her scholarly work, Landon was also an accomplished performer. She played the piano and harpsichord and was known for her interpretations of Bach's keyboard music. Landon's career as a performer and scholar intersected when she became involved in the project to record Bach's complete keyboard works for the Teldec label. She served as the editor for the project and worked closely with the performers to ensure that the recordings were faithful to Bach's original intentions. The recordings were released between 1968 and 1978 and were widely praised for their musicality and authenticity. Landon's work on the Teldec recordings led to other recording projects, including a series of recordings of Bach's cantatas with the Leonhardt Consort. She also recorded solo albums of Bach's keyboard music, including the Goldberg Variations and the Well-Tempered Clavier. Landon's recordings were highly regarded for their clarity, precision, and musicality. In addition to her work as a performer and scholar, Landon was also a respected teacher. She taught at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel and at the Hochschule für Musik in Frankfurt. Her students included many accomplished musicians who went on to have successful careers in music. Landon's contributions to the world of music were recognized with numerous awards and honors. She was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1981 and the Bach Medal of the City of Leipzig in 1999. She was also made an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. Landon continued to be active in music until her death on March 23, 2020, at the age of 98. Her legacy lives on through her recordings, her scholarly work, and the many musicians she taught and inspired. She will be remembered as a musician who brought a deep understanding and love of Bach's music to audiences around the world.
