Artist Info
Role:ComposerBirth:in Belgrade, SerbiaVladimir Tosic was a Serbian composer and pianist who was born on December 22, 1964, in Belgrade, Serbia. He was raised in a family of musicians, and his father was a well-known composer and conductor. Tosic began playing the piano at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. He attended the Belgrade Music School, where he studied piano and composition. In 1983, Tosic enrolled at the University of Arts in Belgrade, where he studied composition with Vlastimir Trajkovic. He also studied piano with Arbo Valdma and chamber music with Dejan Mihailovic. During his time at the university, Tosic began to develop his own unique style of composition, which was influenced by both classical and contemporary music. After graduating from the University of Arts in 1988, Tosic continued to compose and perform. He became a member of the Serbian Composers Association and began to receive commissions for his work. In 1990, he won the first prize at the International Competition for Young Composers in Belgrade for his piece "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra." Tosic's music is characterized by its emotional intensity and complex harmonies. He often used unconventional techniques, such as extended techniques for the piano and aleatoric elements, to create a unique sound. His compositions range from solo piano pieces to large-scale orchestral works. One of Tosic's most famous works is his "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra," which he composed in 1989. The piece is divided into three movements and features virtuosic piano writing and lush orchestration. The concerto has been performed by many renowned pianists, including Aleksandar Serdar and Nada Kolundzija. Another notable work by Tosic is his "String Quartet No. 1," which he composed in 1992. The piece is a haunting and introspective work that explores themes of loss and mourning. The quartet has been performed by many ensembles, including the Belgrade String Quartet and the Arditti Quartet. Tosic also composed several works for solo piano, including his "Piano Sonata No. 1," which he composed in 1995. The sonata is a virtuosic and challenging work that showcases Tosic's technical prowess as a pianist and composer. In addition to his work as a composer, Tosic was also a respected pianist. He often performed his own compositions in concert and was known for his passionate and expressive playing. He also collaborated with many other musicians, including the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra and the Serbian National Theatre. Tragically, Tosic's life was cut short when he passed away on December 23, 2001, at the age of 37. Despite his short career, he left behind a legacy of powerful and emotionally charged music that continues to be performed and admired by musicians and audiences around the world.More....
