Role:ComposerPeriod:ModernGenre:ChamberBayan Northcott was a British composer, music critic, and writer who was born on May 9, 1940, in London, England. He was the son of a British mother and a Russian father who was a composer and conductor. Northcott grew up in a musical family and was exposed to classical music from a young age. He began playing the piano at the age of six and later learned to play the violin and the viola. Northcott attended the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied composition with Lennox Berkeley and piano with Gordon Green. He also studied musicology at the University of Oxford, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1962. After completing his studies, Northcott worked as a freelance composer and music critic. Northcott's compositions were influenced by a variety of musical styles, including serialism, minimalism, and jazz. His early works were characterized by their use of complex rhythms and harmonies, while his later works were more tonal and melodic. Some of his most notable compositions include "String Quartet No. 1," "Symphony No. 1," and "Piano Sonata No. 2." In addition to his work as a composer, Northcott was also a respected music critic and writer. He wrote for a number of publications, including The Times, The Guardian, and The Independent. He was known for his insightful and often controversial reviews, which were highly regarded by both musicians and music lovers. Northcott was also a prolific author, writing several books on music and musicians. His most notable works include "The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians," "Music for the Third Ear," and "A Classical Music Guide." He was also a regular contributor to BBC Radio 3's "Music Matters" program. Throughout his career, Northcott received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to music and music criticism. In 1997, he was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society's Critic of the Year award, and in 2004, he was awarded the British Academy's Derek Allen Prize for Musicology. Northcott continued to compose and write until his death on January 3, 2022, at the age of 81. His contributions to classical music and music criticism will be remembered for years to come.More....
