Maria Demérus was born on May 12, 1985, in Stockholm, Sweden. She grew up in a family of musicians, with her mother being a pianist and her father a cellist. From a young age, Maria showed a keen interest in music and began taking piano lessons at the age of five. As she grew older, Maria's passion for music only intensified, and she began to explore other instruments. She started playing the violin at the age of eight and the cello at the age of ten. By the time she was a teenager, Maria had become a proficient multi-instrumentalist, with a particular talent for the cello. Maria's talent did not go unnoticed, and she was soon accepted into the prestigious Royal College of Music in Stockholm. There, she studied under some of the most renowned cello teachers in the world, including Mats Lidström and Frans Helmerson. During her time at the Royal College of Music, Maria began to make a name for herself as a soloist. She won several competitions, including the Swedish National Cello Competition and the Nordic Soloist Competition. Her performances were praised for their technical precision and emotional depth. After graduating from the Royal College of Music, Maria continued to pursue her career as a soloist. She performed with some of the world's most renowned orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. Maria's performances were always highly anticipated, and she quickly became known for her ability to bring a unique and personal touch to every piece she played. Her interpretations of classical works were praised for their sensitivity and emotional depth. In addition to her work as a soloist, Maria was also a sought-after chamber musician. She performed with some of the world's most renowned ensembles, including the Emerson String Quartet and the Guarneri Quartet. Throughout her career, Maria received numerous awards and accolades for her performances. She was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2010, which is given to outstanding young musicians who show exceptional promise for the future. Maria's career was tragically cut short when she was diagnosed with cancer in 2015. Despite her illness, she continued to perform whenever she could, and her final performances were praised for their emotional intensity and raw power. Maria Demérus passed away on June 15, 2016, at the age of 31.
