Stefan Safsten was a Swedish composer who was born on May 22, 1954, in Stockholm, Sweden. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a pianist and his mother a singer. From a young age, Safsten showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. He later went on to study music at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, where he received his degree in composition. Safsten's early works were heavily influenced by the classical music of the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly the works of Mozart and Beethoven. However, as he matured as a composer, he began to incorporate more modern elements into his music, such as atonality and serialism. One of Safsten's most notable works is his Symphony No. 1, which was composed in 1982. The symphony is a four-movement work that showcases Safsten's ability to blend traditional and modern elements in his music. The first movement is a lively and energetic piece that features a prominent brass section, while the second movement is a slower, more contemplative piece that highlights the strings. The third movement is a scherzo that features a playful and whimsical melody, while the final movement is a triumphant and grandiose piece that brings the symphony to a thrilling conclusion. Another notable work by Safsten is his Piano Concerto, which was composed in 1990. The concerto is a three-movement work that features a solo piano accompanied by a full orchestra. The first movement is a lively and virtuosic piece that showcases the technical abilities of the soloist, while the second movement is a slower and more introspective piece that highlights the emotional depth of the music. The final movement is a fast and energetic piece that brings the concerto to a thrilling conclusion. Safsten's music has been performed by orchestras and ensembles around the world, including the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. He has also received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the Swedish Academy of Music's Composer of the Year award in 1995. In addition to his work as a composer, Safsten was also a respected music educator. He taught composition at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm for many years, and his students included several notable composers who have gone on to achieve international success. Sadly, Stefan Safsten passed away on December 22, 2019, at the age of 65. However, his legacy as a composer and educator lives on through his music and the many students he inspired and mentored throughout his career.
