Nathan Sommers was born on May 15, 1985, in New York City. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his mother being a pianist and his father a cellist. From a young age, Nathan showed a natural talent for music, and his parents encouraged him to pursue his passion. Nathan began his musical education at the age of five, studying piano with his mother. He quickly progressed and started taking cello lessons with his father at the age of seven. Nathan's parents recognized his exceptional talent and enrolled him in the Juilliard School's Pre-College Division when he was ten years old. At Juilliard, Nathan studied with some of the most renowned cello teachers in the world, including Joel Krosnick and Timothy Eddy. He also had the opportunity to perform in masterclasses with Yo-Yo Ma and Mstislav Rostropovich, two of the greatest cellists of all time. Nathan's talent and hard work paid off when he won the prestigious Young Concert Artists International Auditions in 2005. This competition is known for discovering and launching the careers of some of the world's most talented young musicians, including Pinchas Zukerman, Emanuel Ax, and Dawn Upshaw. After winning the competition, Nathan began performing extensively throughout the United States and Europe. He made his debut at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall in 2006, which was followed by performances at Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Nathan's performances were praised for their technical brilliance, musicality, and emotional depth. He was particularly noted for his ability to bring out the nuances and subtleties of the music he played, whether it was a Bach suite or a contemporary work. In addition to his solo performances, Nathan was also an active chamber musician. He was a founding member of the Sommers String Quartet, which performed regularly in the United States and Europe. The quartet was known for its innovative programming and its ability to bring new audiences to classical music. Nathan's career continued to flourish, and he received numerous awards and accolades. In 2008, he was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is given to outstanding young musicians who show exceptional promise for a significant career in music. He was also a recipient of the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship, which provides financial support and career guidance to exceptional young musicians. Despite his success, Nathan remained humble and dedicated to his craft. He continued to practice for hours every day and sought out new challenges and opportunities to grow as a musician. He was also passionate about teaching and mentoring young musicians, and he frequently gave masterclasses and workshops at music schools and festivals around the world. Tragically, Nathan's promising career was cut short when he died in a car accident in 2011 at the age of 26. His death was a devastating loss to the classical music world, and he was mourned by his family, friends, and fans around the world. Nathan's legacy lives on through his recordings, which showcase his exceptional talent and musicality. He also inspired countless young musicians to pursue their dreams and to strive for excellence in their craft. Nathan Sommers will always be remembered as one of the most talented and promising young cellists of his generation.
