Stuart Gerber is a percussionist and composer who has performed with numerous orchestras and ensembles around the world. He is also a professor of percussion at Georgia State University. Jan Berry Baker is a flutist who has performed with many orchestras and ensembles, including the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and the Atlanta Opera. The duo's name, Bent Frequency, is a reference to the concept of microtonality, which involves using intervals smaller than the traditional half-step. This approach to music allows for a wider range of expression and experimentation. Since its founding, Bent Frequency Duo Project has performed at numerous festivals and venues around the world, including the Spoleto Festival USA, the High Museum of Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia. The ensemble has also collaborated with many composers and artists, including John Luther Adams, Jennifer Higdon, and Michael Gordon. One of the highlights of Bent Frequency Duo Project's career was their performance of John Luther Adams' "Inuksuit" in 2013. The piece, which involves a large ensemble of percussionists and other performers, was performed outdoors in Atlanta's Piedmont Park. The performance was a huge success, drawing a large crowd and earning critical acclaim. Another notable performance by the ensemble was their collaboration with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in 2015. The duo performed Michael Gordon's "Timber" with the orchestra, which was conducted by Robert Spano. The performance was praised for its innovative approach to classical music and its use of unconventional instruments and techniques. Bent Frequency Duo Project has also received numerous awards and honors for their work. In 2010, the ensemble was awarded a grant from the Aaron Copland Fund for Music. The grant allowed the duo to commission new works from several composers, including Jennifer Higdon and Michael Gordon. In 2014, Bent Frequency Duo Project was awarded the Chamber Music America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming. The award recognized the ensemble's commitment to exploring new and innovative approaches to classical music. Overall, Bent Frequency Duo Project is a unique and innovative ensemble that has made a significant impact on the world of classical music. Through their collaborations with composers and artists, as well as their own performances and recordings, the duo has pushed the boundaries of what is possible in classical music and inspired a new generation of musicians and audiences.
