The founding members of the Sequoia String Quartet were violinists Mark Volkert and Bonnie Hampton, violist Katherine Murdock, and cellist David Kadarauch. All four musicians had impressive backgrounds and had performed with some of the most prestigious orchestras and ensembles in the world. They came together with a shared vision of creating a quartet that would showcase their individual talents while also highlighting the beauty and complexity of chamber music. The quartet's name was inspired by the majestic Sequoia trees that grow in California's Sierra Nevada mountains. The members felt that the name represented the strength and beauty of their music and the natural world that inspired it. From the beginning, the Sequoia String Quartet was committed to performing a diverse repertoire that included both classical masterpieces and contemporary works. They quickly gained a reputation for their innovative interpretations and their ability to bring new life to even the most well-known pieces. One of the highlights of the quartet's early career was their performance at the 1990 Olympic Arts Festival in Seattle. They were chosen to represent the United States in a series of concerts that showcased the best of American chamber music. The quartet's performance was widely praised, and they received numerous invitations to perform at other festivals and venues around the world. Over the years, the Sequoia String Quartet has performed at some of the most prestigious concert halls and festivals in the world. They have been featured at the Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, and the Ravinia Festival, among others. They have also collaborated with some of the most renowned musicians of our time, including Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, and Joshua Bell. In addition to their performances, the Sequoia String Quartet has also been recognized for their recordings. They have released several albums, including a critically acclaimed recording of Beethoven's late quartets. Their recordings have received numerous awards and nominations, including a Grammy nomination for Best Chamber Music Performance. Sadly, the Sequoia String Quartet disbanded in 2013 after 24 years of performing together.
