John Walker was a renowned classical music artist who was born on August 30, 1941, in Washington, D.C. He was the son of a church organist and grew up in a musical family. His father was his first music teacher, and he started playing the piano at the age of four. Walker's talent was evident from an early age, and he quickly became a prodigy. Walker's family moved to Paris when he was ten years old, and he continued his music education there. He studied at the Paris Conservatory and later at the Juilliard School in New York City. He also studied with some of the most prominent musicians of his time, including Nadia Boulanger, Rosalyn Tureck, and Marcel Dupré. Walker's career as a concert pianist began in the 1960s, and he quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented pianists of his generation. He made his debut at Carnegie Hall in 1965, and his performance was met with critical acclaim. He went on to perform at some of the most prestigious concert halls in the world, including the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the Salle Pleyel in Paris. Walker was known for his virtuosic performances of the works of Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart. He was also a champion of contemporary music and premiered works by some of the most important composers of the 20th century, including Elliott Carter, George Crumb, and Milton Babbitt. In addition to his career as a concert pianist, Walker was also a respected music educator. He taught at the Peabody Institute in Baltimore, the University of Illinois, and the University of Michigan. He was known for his rigorous teaching style and his ability to inspire his students to achieve their full potential. Throughout his career, Walker received numerous awards and honors. He was a recipient of the Avery Fisher Prize, one of the most prestigious awards in classical music. He was also awarded the National Medal of Arts by President George W. Bush in 2003. One of the highlights of Walker's career was his performance of Bach's Goldberg Variations at the White House in 1978. The performance was attended by President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, and was broadcast on national television. The performance was widely praised, and it helped to cement Walker's reputation as one of the greatest pianists of his time. Another notable performance by Walker was his 1986 performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 with the London Symphony Orchestra. The performance was recorded and released on CD, and it remains one of the most acclaimed recordings of the work. Walker continued to perform and teach until his death in 2011.
