Peter Matz was a renowned American composer, arranger, and conductor who made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Born on August 1, 1928, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Matz showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. He went on to study music at the Carnegie Mellon University and later at the Juilliard School in New York City. Matz began his career as a pianist and conductor in the 1950s, working on Broadway shows such as "The Sound of Music" and "Gypsy." He quickly gained a reputation as a talented arranger and conductor, and his work caught the attention of some of the biggest names in the music industry. In the 1960s, Matz began working with Barbra Streisand, arranging and conducting her music for several albums and concerts. He also worked with other notable artists such as Liza Minnelli, Bette Midler, and Diana Ross. Matz's arrangements were known for their lush, orchestral sound and his ability to bring out the best in each performer. One of Matz's most significant achievements was his work on Streisand's 1967 album "Simply Streisand." The album featured several of Matz's arrangements, including the hit song "Happy Days Are Here Again." The album was a critical and commercial success, earning Matz a Grammy Award for Best Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s). Matz continued to work with Streisand throughout the 1970s, arranging and conducting her music for several more albums and concerts. He also worked on other projects, including the 1972 film adaptation of the musical "Cabaret," for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Adaptation Score. In addition to his work in popular music, Matz also had a successful career in classical music. He conducted several orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic. He also composed several classical works, including a piano concerto and a symphony. Matz's contributions to the world of music were recognized with several awards and honors throughout his career.
