Artist Info
Role:EnsembleThe Frankenland State Symphony Orchestra is a classical music ensemble based in the German state of Bavaria. The orchestra was founded in 1946, shortly after the end of World War II, as part of the cultural rebuilding effort in the region. The founding members of the orchestra were a group of musicians who had previously played in various orchestras across Germany, but had been displaced by the war. The orchestra's first conductor was Hans Rosbaud, a renowned German conductor who had previously led the Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra. Under Rosbaud's leadership, the Frankenland State Symphony Orchestra quickly gained a reputation for its high-quality performances and innovative programming. Over the years, the orchestra has had a number of notable conductors, including Wolfgang Sawallisch, who served as the orchestra's principal conductor from 1953 to 1958. Sawallisch was followed by a series of other distinguished conductors, including Rafael Kubelik, who led the orchestra from 1961 to 1979, and James Levine, who served as principal conductor from 1982 to 1993. One of the highlights of the orchestra's history was its performance at the 1958 World's Fair in Brussels, where it played a program of works by German composers, including Beethoven, Brahms, and Wagner. The performance was widely praised for its technical precision and emotional depth, and helped to establish the orchestra as one of the leading ensembles in Europe. In addition to its regular concert series, the Frankenland State Symphony Orchestra has also been involved in a number of special projects over the years. In 1989, the orchestra collaborated with the Bavarian State Opera to perform a new production of Richard Wagner's Ring Cycle, which was widely acclaimed for its innovative staging and powerful performances. The orchestra has also been recognized for its recordings, which have won numerous awards over the years. In 1991, the orchestra's recording of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, conducted by James Levine, won a Grammy Award for Best Orchestral Performance. Today, the Frankenland State Symphony Orchestra continues to be one of the leading classical music ensembles in Germany, with a reputation for its technical excellence and innovative programming. The orchestra's current principal conductor is Christian Thielemann, who has been with the ensemble since 2012. Under Thielemann's leadership, the orchestra has continued to push the boundaries of classical music, with performances that are both technically precise and emotionally powerful.More....
