He was the son of Johann Duben, a prominent musician and composer in Leipzig, and grew up in a musical family. Andreas showed an early interest in music and began his musical education under the guidance of his father. Duben's musical talent was evident from a young age, and he quickly became a skilled keyboard player and composer. He studied music theory and composition with his father and other prominent musicians in Leipzig, including Johann Kuhnau, the city's music director. Duben's early works were influenced by the music of his father and Kuhnau, as well as the works of other Baroque composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Philipp Telemann. In 1693, Duben was appointed as the organist at the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, a position that his father had held before him. He held this position for over 40 years, until his death in 1732. During his time as the organist at St. Thomas Church, Duben composed a large number of works for the church, including cantatas, motets, and chorales. He also wrote music for other churches in Leipzig and for the city's university. Duben's compositions were highly regarded during his lifetime, and he was considered one of the leading composers in Leipzig. His music was known for its intricate counterpoint and use of chromaticism, as well as its expressive melodies and harmonies. Duben's works were performed regularly in Leipzig and other cities in Germany, and he was often invited to perform his music at concerts and festivals. One of Duben's most famous works is his Magnificat in D major, which he composed in 1708. The Magnificat is a setting of the biblical text known as the Song of Mary, and it is one of the most important works in the liturgical music of the Baroque era. Duben's Magnificat is known for its grandeur and complexity, with intricate choral and instrumental parts that showcase the composer's skill in counterpoint and harmony. Another notable work by Duben is his collection of chorale preludes for organ, which he composed in the early 1700s. The collection includes over 100 pieces, each based on a different hymn tune. Duben's chorale preludes are known for their expressive melodies and harmonies, as well as their use of ornamentation and improvisation. Duben's music was highly influential in the development of Baroque music in Germany, and his works were studied and admired by many composers of the time. His legacy as a composer and musician continues to be celebrated today, with performances and recordings of his music still being produced and enjoyed by audiences around the world.More....
