He was the son of a musician and grew up in a musical family, which likely influenced his early interest in music. Barbetta began his musical education at a young age, studying with his father and other local musicians in Venice. As a young man, Barbetta moved to Rome to further his musical studies. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented composer and performer, and was soon appointed as the maestro di cappella (music director) at the Church of San Giovanni in Laterano. During his time in Rome, Barbetta composed a number of sacred works, including masses, motets, and oratorios. In 1704, Barbetta returned to Venice, where he continued to compose and perform music. He became a member of the prestigious Accademia Filarmonica di Venezia, and his music was performed at many of the city's most important musical events. Barbetta's compositions from this period include a number of operas, as well as instrumental works such as sonatas and concertos. One of Barbetta's most famous works is his opera La Rosalinda, which premiered in Venice in 1713. The opera was a great success, and was performed throughout Italy and in other European countries. La Rosalinda is a comic opera, with a plot that revolves around the romantic entanglements of a group of young people. The music is lively and energetic, with many memorable melodies and catchy rhythms. Barbetta continued to compose music throughout his life, and his works were widely admired by his contemporaries. He died in Venice in 1755, at the age of 80.
