Role:EnsembleThe University of Iowa Center for New Music is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been at the forefront of contemporary music for over five decades. Founded in 1966 by composer and pianist Richard Hervig, the ensemble has been dedicated to the performance, creation, and promotion of new music. The Center for New Music is comprised of a core group of faculty performers, including David Gompper (piano), Volkan Orhon (violin), Christine Rutledge (cello), and Benjamin Coelho (bassoon). These musicians are joined by guest artists and composers from around the world, making the ensemble a truly international group. Over the years, the Center for New Music has premiered hundreds of new works by composers from all over the world, including such luminaries as John Cage, Morton Feldman, and György Ligeti. The ensemble has also commissioned numerous works, including pieces by Pulitzer Prize-winning composers John Harbison and Shulamit Ran. One of the highlights of the Center for New Music's history was its participation in the 1972 Warsaw Autumn Festival, one of the most prestigious contemporary music festivals in the world. The ensemble performed works by American composers George Crumb and Roger Reynolds, as well as Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki. In addition to its performances, the Center for New Music has also been involved in numerous educational and outreach programs. The ensemble has worked with students of all ages, from elementary school to college, and has conducted workshops and masterclasses around the world. The Center for New Music has received numerous awards and accolades over the years, including grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Rockefeller Foundation. In 2016, the ensemble celebrated its 50th anniversary with a series of concerts and events, including a performance of John Cage's "Musicircus" that involved over 100 performers and audience members. Today, the University of Iowa Center for New Music continues to be a leading force in contemporary music, with a commitment to innovation, experimentation, and collaboration.
