Fábio Cury is a Brazilian classical pianist and composer who has gained international recognition for his virtuosic performances and innovative compositions. Born in São Paulo in 1985, Cury showed an early aptitude for music and began studying piano at the age of six. He quickly demonstrated a natural talent for the instrument, and by the time he was a teenager, he was already performing in public concerts and competitions. Cury's early training was heavily influenced by the classical tradition, and he spent many hours practicing the works of Bach, Beethoven, and Chopin. However, he was also drawn to more contemporary styles of music, and he began experimenting with jazz and improvisation. This eclectic approach to music would become a hallmark of Cury's style, as he continued to explore new sounds and techniques throughout his career. In 2004, Cury was awarded a scholarship to study at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City. There, he worked with some of the world's leading pianists and composers, including Emanuel Ax, Yoheved Kaplinsky, and John Corigliano. He also had the opportunity to perform in some of the city's most renowned concert halls, such as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. After completing his studies at Juilliard, Cury returned to Brazil and began to establish himself as a soloist and chamber musician. He quickly gained a reputation for his dynamic and expressive performances, and he was soon invited to perform with some of the country's leading orchestras, including the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra and the Rio de Janeiro Philharmonic. One of the highlights of Cury's early career was his performance at the 2008 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. This prestigious event, held every four years in Fort Worth, Texas, is one of the most important competitions for young pianists, and attracts top talent from around the world. Cury's performance was widely praised for its technical brilliance and emotional depth, and he was awarded a special prize for his interpretation of a work by Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos. In addition to his work as a performer, Cury has also gained recognition as a composer. His compositions draw on a wide range of influences, from classical music to jazz and Brazilian popular music. He has written works for solo piano, chamber ensembles, and orchestra, and his music has been performed by musicians around the world. One of Cury's most notable compositions is his Piano Concerto No. 1, which was premiered in 2014 by the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra. The concerto is a virtuosic showcase for the soloist, with intricate passagework and soaring melodies. It also incorporates elements of Brazilian music, such as samba rhythms and folk melodies, giving it a unique and vibrant character. Cury's work as a composer has been recognized with several awards and honors. In 2012, he was awarded the Prêmio Funarte de Composição Clássica, a prestigious prize for classical composers in Brazil. He has also been commissioned to write works for a variety of ensembles and organizations, including the New York Philharmonic and the São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra. Throughout his career, Cury has remained committed to promoting classical music in Brazil and around the world. He has given masterclasses and workshops for young musicians, and has served as a judge for several competitions and festivals.
