The Memphis Chamber Choir is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1992 by John Ayer, a renowned conductor and music educator. The choir is based in Memphis, Tennessee, and is composed of professional singers who are dedicated to performing choral music of the highest quality. The founding of the Memphis Chamber Choir was a result of John Ayer's vision to create a professional choral ensemble that would showcase the rich choral tradition of Memphis. Ayer, who was the director of choral activities at the University of Memphis at the time, wanted to create a group that would perform a wide range of choral music, from early music to contemporary works. The choir's first performance was in December 1992, and it was an instant success. The choir's unique sound and impeccable musicianship quickly gained the attention of the Memphis community, and it soon became one of the most sought-after choral ensembles in the region. Over the years, the Memphis Chamber Choir has had a number of talented singers and musicians who have contributed to its success. Some of the main members of the choir include sopranos Emily Johnson and Sarah Herrington, altos Jennifer Puckett and Rachel Coates, tenors Michael Rector and David Ayers, and basses Michael Sanelli and John Ayer. One of the highlights of the Memphis Chamber Choir's career was its performance at the 2002 American Choral Directors Association National Convention in New York City. The choir was one of only six choirs selected to perform at the convention, and it received rave reviews for its performance of works by Bach, Brahms, and contemporary composer Morten Lauridsen. In addition to its performance at the ACDA National Convention, the Memphis Chamber Choir has also performed at a number of other prestigious venues and events. These include performances at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, South Carolina, and the Memphis Symphony Orchestra's Holiday Pops concerts. The Memphis Chamber Choir has also received a number of awards and accolades over the years. In 2001, the choir was awarded the Memphis Arts Council's Arts Award for Excellence in Music, and in 2005, it received the Tennessee Governor's Arts Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Arts. In addition to its performances and awards, the Memphis Chamber Choir is also committed to music education and outreach. The choir regularly performs at schools and community events, and it has also collaborated with other arts organizations in Memphis to promote the arts in the community. Overall, the Memphis Chamber Choir is a testament to the rich choral tradition of Memphis and the dedication and talent of its members. With its impeccable musicianship and commitment to excellence, the choir has become one of the most respected and beloved choral ensembles in the region and beyond.
