The Kodály Philharmonic Orchestra is a classical music ensemble based in Debrecen, Hungary. The orchestra was founded in 1979 by conductor and composer Zoltán Kocsis, who served as its artistic director until 1983. The orchestra was named after Hungarian composer and music educator Zoltán Kodály, who was a major influence on Kocsis and many other Hungarian musicians. The Kodály Philharmonic Orchestra is made up of around 70 musicians, including strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. The orchestra has a reputation for its high level of technical skill and its ability to perform a wide range of repertoire, from classical to contemporary music. Over the years, the Kodály Philharmonic Orchestra has performed in many prestigious venues around the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Musikverein in Vienna. The orchestra has also collaborated with many renowned soloists and conductors, including pianist Martha Argerich, violinist Maxim Vengerov, and conductor Sir Neville Marriner. One of the highlights of the Kodály Philharmonic Orchestra's career was its performance at the 1982 Budapest Spring Festival, where it premiered Kocsis's own composition, "Concerto for Orchestra."
