Jorge Antunes is a Brazilian composer who was born on March 23, 1942, in Rio de Janeiro. He is considered one of the pioneers of electronic music in Brazil and has made significant contributions to the development of contemporary music in the country. Antunes grew up in a family of musicians, and his father was a composer and conductor. He began studying music at a young age and showed a particular interest in the piano. He later studied composition at the National School of Music in Rio de Janeiro, where he was introduced to the works of avant-garde composers such as Pierre Boulez and Karlheinz Stockhausen. In the early 1960s, Antunes became interested in electronic music and began experimenting with tape recorders and other electronic equipment. He was one of the first Brazilian composers to work with electronic music, and his early works were influenced by the musique concrète movement in France. Antunes's first major work was "Valsa Sideral" (Sidereal Waltz), which he composed in 1962. The piece was created using tape recorders and features a collage of sounds, including electronic tones, natural sounds, and snippets of music. "Valsa Sideral" was well-received and helped establish Antunes as a leading figure in the Brazilian avant-garde music scene. In the years that followed, Antunes continued to experiment with electronic music and developed a unique style that blended traditional Brazilian music with avant-garde techniques. He composed a number of works for tape, including "Cinta Cita" (1969), "Auto-Retrato Sobre Paisaje Portátil" (1972), and "Música para 12 Instrumentos, Microondas, Helicópteros e Canções" (1979). Antunes also composed works for traditional instruments, including "Sinfonia dos Orixás" (Symphony of the Orixás), which was premiered in 1977. The piece is based on the Afro-Brazilian religion of Candomblé and features a large orchestra, choir, and soloists. "Sinfonia dos Orixás" is considered one of Antunes's most significant works and has been performed by orchestras around the world. In addition to his work as a composer, Antunes has also been a teacher and mentor to many young musicians in Brazil. He has taught at several universities and conservatories, including the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and the São Paulo State University. Antunes has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to music, including the National Order of Scientific Merit from the Brazilian government in 2006. He continues to compose and perform, and his works are regularly performed by orchestras and ensembles around the world. Overall, Jorge Antunes is a pioneering figure in Brazilian music and has made significant contributions to the development of electronic and contemporary music in the country. His unique style and innovative use of electronic equipment have inspired generations of musicians and helped establish Brazil as a leading center for avant-garde music.
