Michael Manring is a renowned American bassist and composer who has made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Born on June 27, 1960, in Annapolis, Maryland, Manring grew up in a musical family and started playing the piano at the age of four. However, it was not until he discovered the bass guitar at the age of 19 that he found his true calling. Manring's early musical influences included jazz, rock, and funk, but he soon became interested in classical music and began studying the works of composers such as Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart. He also studied music theory and composition at the University of Oregon, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 1984. Manring's career as a professional musician began in the early 1980s when he joined the band Montreux, which was led by guitarist Alex de Grassi. He also played with the band Windham Hill, which was known for its new age and acoustic music. In 1986, Manring released his first solo album, "Unusual Weather," which showcased his unique style of playing the bass guitar. Over the years, Manring has collaborated with many notable musicians, including Michael Hedges, Will Ackerman, and Yo-Yo Ma. He has also performed with orchestras such as the Oakland Symphony and the Philadelphia Orchestra, and has been a featured soloist with the San Francisco Symphony. One of Manring's most notable performances was his solo bass performance at the 1989 NAMM show, which was attended by thousands of music industry professionals. He also performed at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain, and at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. Manring has received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 1994, he won the Bass Player Magazine Reader's Poll for Best Jazz Bassist, and in 1995, he won the same award for Best Experimental Bassist. He has also been nominated for several Grammy Awards, including Best New Age Album for his 1991 album "Drastic Measures." In addition to his work as a performer, Manring is also a respected music educator. He has taught at the California Jazz Conservatory and the Berklee College of Music, and has conducted workshops and masterclasses around the world. Manring's music is characterized by his innovative use of the bass guitar, which he often plays with unconventional techniques such as tapping, harmonics, and slapping. His compositions are known for their complex harmonies and rhythms, and often incorporate elements of jazz, classical, and world music. In recent years, Manring has continued to push the boundaries of what is possible on the bass guitar. He has released several albums, including "Soliloquy," "The Book of Flame," and "Small Moments," which have received critical acclaim for their creativity and originality.
