The Scottish Festival Chorus is a classical music ensemble based in Scotland. Founded in 1974, the chorus has become one of the most renowned choral groups in the country, known for its exceptional performances of classical music. The Scottish Festival Chorus was founded by Sir Alexander Gibson, a Scottish conductor who was the principal conductor of the Scottish National Orchestra from 1959 to 1984. Sir Gibson had a vision of creating a chorus that would perform at the Edinburgh International Festival, one of the most prestigious arts festivals in the world. The chorus was initially made up of amateur singers from across Scotland, but over the years it has grown to include professional singers as well. Today, the chorus is made up of around 150 singers, all of whom are highly skilled and dedicated to their craft. The Scottish Festival Chorus has performed at many of the world's most prestigious venues, including the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Sydney Opera House in Australia, and Carnegie Hall in New York. The chorus has also performed with some of the world's most renowned orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. One of the highlights of the Scottish Festival Chorus's career was its performance of Verdi's Requiem at the Edinburgh International Festival in 1982. The performance was conducted by Sir Alexander Gibson and featured the Scottish National Orchestra. The performance was widely praised by critics and is still considered one of the greatest performances in the history of the festival. In addition to its performances at the Edinburgh International Festival, the Scottish Festival Chorus has also performed at many other festivals and events throughout Scotland and the UK. The chorus has also toured extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and North America, bringing its unique sound and style to audiences around the world. Over the years, the Scottish Festival Chorus has received many awards and accolades for its performances. In 1992, the chorus was awarded the Queen's Award for Export Achievement in recognition of its success in promoting Scottish culture and music around the world. The chorus has also been nominated for several Grammy Awards for its recordings of classical music. The Scottish Festival Chorus continues to be one of the most respected and admired choral groups in the world. Its dedication to excellence and its commitment to promoting Scottish culture and music have made it a beloved institution in Scotland and beyond.
