Dmitri Kogan was born on August 29, 1978, in Moscow, Russia. He was born into a family of musicians, with his father being the renowned violinist Leonid Kogan and his mother, Elizaveta Gilels, being the daughter of the famous pianist Emil Gilels. Dmitri began playing the violin at the age of four and was trained by his father. At the age of six, Dmitri made his debut performance at the Moscow Conservatory, playing the Mozart Violin Concerto No. 3. He continued to perform in concerts and competitions throughout his childhood and teenage years, winning numerous awards and accolades. In 1995, Dmitri moved to Germany to study at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hannover. He continued to win awards and competitions, including the International Violin Competition in Kloster Schöntal and the International Violin Competition in Novosibirsk. Dmitri's career took off in the early 2000s when he won the prestigious International Violin Competition in Indianapolis in 2002.
