He was the younger brother of the famous Swiss composer Arthur Honegger. Henri Honegger was a prolific composer who wrote in a variety of genres, including orchestral music, chamber music, choral music, and opera. Henri Honegger began his musical studies at the Geneva Conservatory, where he studied piano, harmony, and counterpoint. He later studied composition with Charles-Marie Widor in Paris. In 1896, he moved to Zurich, where he worked as a music critic for the Neue Zürcher Zeitung. He also conducted the Zurich Symphony Orchestra and the Zurich Opera. In 1900, Henri Honegger moved to Lausanne, where he became the conductor of the Lausanne Symphony Orchestra. He held this position until 1911, when he moved to Geneva to become the conductor of the Geneva Conservatory Orchestra. He remained in this position until 1937. During his tenure as conductor of the Geneva Conservatory Orchestra, Henri Honegger became known for his innovative programming and his commitment to contemporary music. He conducted the premieres of many important works, including Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring" and Bartók's "Concerto for Orchestra." Henri Honegger was also a prolific composer. His works include several operas, including "Le Roi David," which was based on the biblical story of King David. This work was premiered in 1921 and was a great success. It has since become one of Henri Honegger's most famous works. In addition to his work as a composer and conductor, Henri Honegger was also a respected music critic. He wrote for several Swiss newspapers and was known for his insightful and thoughtful reviews. Henri Honegger received many honors and awards during his lifetime. In 1923, he was awarded the Prix de Rome for his composition "Le Chant de la Vie." He was also awarded the Grand Prix de la Ville de Paris in 1931 for his opera "Judith."
