John Reeman was born on May 12, 1950, in London, England. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a pianist and his mother a violinist. From a young age, Reeman showed a natural talent for music and began playing the piano at the age of four. He later learned to play the violin and the cello. Reeman attended the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied composition under the tutelage of renowned composer, Sir William Walton. During his time at the academy, Reeman composed several pieces that were well-received by his peers and professors. After graduating from the academy, Reeman began his career as a composer, writing music for various orchestras and ensembles. His early works were heavily influenced by the classical composers of the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly Mozart and Beethoven. In the 1970s, Reeman began to experiment with different styles and techniques, incorporating elements of jazz and rock into his compositions. This led to the creation of some of his most popular works, including his Symphony No. 3, which features a fusion of classical and rock music. Throughout his career, Reeman composed music for a wide range of ensembles, including orchestras, chamber groups, and solo performers. His works have been performed by some of the world's most renowned musicians, including Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, and Joshua Bell. One of Reeman's most notable works is his opera, "The Tempest," which was commissioned by the Royal Opera House in London. The opera, which premiered in 1988, is based on the play by William Shakespeare and features a libretto by poet and playwright, Ted Hughes. Another highlight of Reeman's career was his appointment as composer-in-residence for the London Symphony Orchestra in 1995. During his tenure, he composed several works for the orchestra, including his Symphony No. 5, which was premiered by the orchestra in 1998. Reeman's music has been praised for its emotional depth and technical skill. His compositions often feature complex harmonies and intricate rhythms, showcasing his mastery of the craft. Despite his success, Reeman remained humble and dedicated to his art, always striving to improve and evolve as a composer. Sadly, John Reeman passed away on June 15, 2010, at the age of 60. However, his legacy lives on through his music, which continues to be performed and enjoyed by audiences around the world.
