He was the youngest of three children born to his parents, who were both musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Constantin grew up in a musical household, and he began playing the piano at a young age. As a child, Constantin showed a natural talent for music, and he quickly became a prodigy. He began performing in public at the age of six, and he gave his first solo recital at the age of eight. His parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. In 1950, Constantin enrolled at the Cluj-Napoca Conservatory, where he studied piano under the tutelage of some of the most renowned teachers in Romania. He quickly distinguished himself as a gifted pianist, and he won several awards and competitions during his time at the conservatory. After graduating from the conservatory in 1955, Constantin began his professional career as a concert pianist. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented pianists in Romania, and he was soon invited to perform at some of the country's most prestigious venues. In 1958, Constantin won first prize at the George Enescu International Piano Competition, which was held in Bucharest. This was a major achievement for him, and it helped to launch his international career. He began performing in other countries, including Hungary, Poland, and the Soviet Union. In 1960, Constantin was invited to perform at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. This was one of the most prestigious piano competitions in the world, and Constantin was one of only a few Romanian pianists to ever be invited to participate. He performed brilliantly, and he was awarded the third prize. Over the next several years, Constantin continued to perform at major venues around the world. He was invited to perform with some of the most renowned orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. In 1970, Constantin was awarded the title of Honored Artist of Romania, which was a major honor in his home country. He continued to receive awards and accolades throughout his career, including the Order of Cultural Merit, which was awarded to him by the Romanian government in 2000. Throughout his career, Constantin was known for his technical brilliance and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he played. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff. In addition to his career as a performer, Constantin was also a respected teacher. He taught at the Cluj-Napoca Conservatory for many years, and he mentored several generations of young pianists. Constantin continued to perform and teach until his death on December 31, 2011, at the age of 76. He left behind a legacy as one of the greatest pianists of his generation, and his contributions to the world of classical music will be remembered for many years to come.More....
