Born on December 24, 1947, in Macon, Georgia, Brown grew up in a musical family. His father was a Baptist minister and his mother was a pianist and choir director. Brown's early exposure to music came from his mother, who taught him to play the piano and sing in the church choir. Brown's passion for music continued to grow throughout his childhood and teenage years. He attended Ballard-Hudson High School in Macon, where he was a member of the school's band and choir. After graduating from high school, Brown attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in music education. After completing his undergraduate studies, Brown went on to earn a Master of Music degree in choral conducting from the University of Michigan. He later earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in composition from the University of Kentucky. Throughout his career, Brown has composed numerous works for choir, orchestra, and chamber ensembles. His compositions have been performed by some of the world's leading orchestras and choirs, including the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the National Symphony Orchestra. One of Brown's most notable works is his opera, "The Life and Times of Malcolm X." The opera, which premiered in 1986, tells the story of the civil rights leader's life and legacy. The opera has been performed by numerous opera companies and has received critical acclaim for its powerful music and storytelling. In addition to his work as a composer, Brown is also a respected conductor and educator. He has served as the director of choral activities at Morehouse College and has conducted numerous choirs and orchestras throughout his career. Brown's contributions to the world of classical music have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. He has received the Governor's Award for the Arts in Georgia and the National Endowment for the Arts Composer Fellowship. He has also been inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame.
