He was born on October 28, 1846, in Vaasa, a coastal town in western Finland. His father, Johan Wegelius, was a music teacher and organist, and his mother, Maria Lovisa, was a homemaker. Martin was the youngest of six children, and he showed an early interest in music, which his father encouraged. Martin received his first music lessons from his father and later studied at the Helsinki Music Institute. In 1867, he traveled to Leipzig, Germany, to study at the Leipzig Conservatory, where he studied composition with Carl Reinecke and Ernst Friedrich Richter. He also studied musicology with Philipp Spitta and Moritz Hauptmann. Wegelius was an excellent student and won several awards for his compositions. After completing his studies in Leipzig, Wegelius returned to Finland and began his career as a music educator. He taught at the Helsinki Music Institute and later became the director of the Turku Music Institute. In 1882, he was appointed as a professor of musicology at the University of Helsinki, where he taught until his retirement in 1917. Wegelius was a dedicated teacher and mentor, and many of his students went on to become prominent composers and musicians. Wegelius was also a prolific composer, and his works include orchestral music, chamber music, choral music, and songs. His compositions are characterized by their lyrical melodies, rich harmonies, and expressive use of orchestration. Some of his most notable works include the Symphony in E-flat major, Op. 7, the String Quartet in D minor, Op. 10, and the choral work "Kullervo's Death," Op. 12. Wegelius was also a musicologist and wrote several books on Finnish music and folk music. His most significant work is "Suomen kansan sävelmiä" (Finnish Folk Melodies), a collection of Finnish folk songs that he collected and arranged for piano. The book was published in 1893 and is still considered an essential reference for Finnish folk music. Wegelius was a prominent figure in the Finnish music scene and played a significant role in the development of classical music in Finland. He was a member of the Finnish Society of Composers and the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters. He also served as the chairman of the Finnish Music Association and was instrumental in the establishment of the Sibelius Academy, Finland's premier music school. Wegelius was a respected and beloved figure in Finnish music, and his contributions to the field were recognized with several honors and awards. He was awarded the Order of the White Rose of Finland in 1908 and was made a Knight of the Order of the Lion of Finland in 1917. He was also awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Helsinki in 1917. Martin Wegelius died on September 13, 1906, in Helsinki, Finland, at the age of 59. His legacy lives on through his compositions, his writings on Finnish music, and the many students he taught and mentored.
