The Jacobean Consort of Viols is a renowned classical music ensemble that specializes in the performance of early music. The ensemble was founded in 1982 by a group of musicians who shared a passion for the music of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The founding members of the ensemble were Caroline Balding, Alison Crum, Susanna Pell, and Roy Marks. The ensemble takes its name from the Jacobean era, which was a period of great artistic and cultural flourishing in England during the reign of King James I. Caroline Balding is a violinist and violist who has performed with many of the world's leading early music ensembles. She is also a highly respected teacher and has taught at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Alison Crum is a viol player who has performed with many of the world's leading early music ensembles, including the Consort of Musicke and the Academy of Ancient Music. She is also a highly respected teacher and has taught at the Royal College of Music in London. Susanna Pell is a viol player who has performed with many of the world's leading early music ensembles, including the Tallis Scholars and the Gabrieli Consort. She is also a highly respected teacher and has taught at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Roy Marks is a viol player who has performed with many of the world's leading early music ensembles, including the Academy of Ancient Music and the English Concert. He is also a highly respected teacher and has taught at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Liam Byrne is a viol player who has performed with many of the world's leading early music ensembles, including the Dunedin Consort and the Academy of Ancient Music. He is also a highly respected composer and has written music for film, television, and theatre. The Jacobean Consort of Viols has performed at many of the world's leading early music festivals and concert series, including the York Early Music Festival, the London Festival of Early Music, and the Boston Early Music Festival. The ensemble has also performed at many of the world's leading concert halls, including the Wigmore Hall in London and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. One of the highlights of the Jacobean Consort of Viols' career was their performance at the 1996 York Early Music Festival, where they performed a program of music by William Lawes. The performance was highly acclaimed by critics and audiences alike, and helped to establish the ensemble as one of the leading early music ensembles in the world. The Jacobean Consort of Viols has also received many awards and accolades for their performances and recordings. In 1998, the ensemble was awarded the prestigious Gramophone Award for their recording of music by William Lawes. The ensemble has also been nominated for several other awards, including the BBC Music Magazine Award and the International Classical Music Award.
