Balint Vazsonyi was a Hungarian-American classical pianist, writer, and political commentator. He was born on January 22, 1936, in Budapest, Hungary, and died on September 29, 2003, in Washington, D.C., United States. Vazsonyi was a child prodigy who began playing the piano at the age of four. He studied at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, where he was a student of Zoltan Kodaly and Bela Bartok. In 1956, Vazsonyi fled Hungary during the Hungarian Revolution and settled in the United States. He continued his studies at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he was a student of Rosina Lhevinne. He made his debut at Carnegie Hall in 1961 and quickly established himself as a leading pianist of his generation. Vazsonyi was known for his virtuosic technique and his interpretations of the works of Franz Liszt. He was also a champion of contemporary music and premiered works by composers such as George Rochberg, Milton Babbitt, and Charles Wuorinen. He recorded extensively for the Vox, Nonesuch, and Newport Classic labels. In addition to his career as a pianist, Vazsonyi was also a writer and political commentator. He wrote several books, including The American Political Tradition: And the Men Who Made It and America's 30 Years War: Who Is Winning?
