Robert Bailey was born on May 12, 1985, in New York City. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his mother being a pianist and his father a cellist. From a young age, Bailey showed a natural talent for music, and he began taking piano lessons at the age of five. Bailey's parents recognized his potential and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He attended the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied piano under the tutelage of renowned pianist and teacher, Yoheved Kaplinsky. Bailey quickly distinguished himself as a gifted pianist, and he won several awards and competitions during his time at Juilliard. After graduating from Juilliard, Bailey continued his studies at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. There, he studied under the guidance of pianist Gary Graffman, who had also taught Kaplinsky. Bailey's time at Curtis was marked by several notable performances, including a solo recital at Carnegie Hall in 2008. Bailey's career as a professional pianist began in earnest after he completed his studies at Curtis. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented and versatile musician, capable of playing a wide range of styles and genres. He performed extensively throughout the United States and Europe, playing in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls. One of Bailey's most notable performances came in 2012, when he played with the New York Philharmonic at Lincoln Center. The performance was a critical and commercial success, and it helped to establish Bailey as one of the leading pianists of his generation. Bailey's career continued to flourish in the years that followed. He played with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. In addition to his work as a performer, Bailey was also a respected teacher and mentor. Many of his students went on to have successful careers in music, and Bailey was widely regarded as one of the most influential teachers of his generation. Bailey's career was marked by numerous awards and accolades. He won the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2010, and he was a recipient of the Gilmore Artist Award in 2014. He was also a frequent guest on radio and television programs, and he was widely regarded as one of the most important classical musicians of his time. Sadly, Bailey's career was cut short when he passed away in 2016 at the age of 31. His death was a shock to the music world, and it was widely mourned by his fans, colleagues, and students.
