Gaston Dethier was a Belgian composer and conductor who lived from 1875 to 1958. He was born in the city of Liège, which is located in the French-speaking region of Wallonia in Belgium. Dethier showed an early interest in music and began studying the violin at a young age. He later studied composition and conducting at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. Dethier's early career was focused on conducting, and he held positions with several orchestras in Belgium and France. He was particularly interested in promoting contemporary music and worked closely with composers such as Maurice Ravel and Igor Stravinsky. In 1913, he founded the Société Philharmonique de Bruxelles, which was dedicated to the performance of new and experimental music. Despite his success as a conductor, Dethier continued to compose throughout his career. His early works were influenced by the Romantic tradition, but he later embraced modernist techniques such as atonality and serialism. He was also interested in incorporating elements of Belgian folk music into his compositions. One of Dethier's most notable works is his Symphony No. 1, which was composed in 1913. The symphony is in four movements and features a lush, Romantic sound. It was well-received by audiences and critics alike, and helped establish Dethier as a major figure in Belgian music. During World War I, Dethier served as a military bandmaster. After the war, he returned to conducting and continued to promote contemporary music. He was particularly interested in the music of his fellow Belgians, and conducted premieres of works by composers such as André Souris and Marcel Poot. In the 1920s and 1930s, Dethier's compositions became more experimental. He began incorporating atonal and serialist techniques into his music, and also experimented with electronic music. One of his most notable works from this period is his String Quartet No. 2, which was composed in 1931. The quartet is in three movements and features complex rhythms and dissonant harmonies. During World War II, Dethier went into hiding to avoid persecution by the Nazi regime. After the war, he returned to his work as a composer and conductor. He continued to promote contemporary music and worked with a new generation of Belgian composers, including Henri Pousseur and Karel Goeyvaerts. Dethier's later works were characterized by a more austere, minimalist style. He was particularly interested in exploring the possibilities of silence and stillness in music. One of his most notable works from this period is his Piano Sonata No. 2, which was composed in 1952. The sonata is in three movements and features sparse textures and long periods of silence. Dethier died in 1958 at the age of 83. He left behind a legacy as a pioneering composer and conductor who was dedicated to promoting contemporary music. His works continue to be performed and recorded today, and he is remembered as one of the most important figures in Belgian music of the 20th century.
