Stephen Williamson is a renowned clarinetist and conductor in the world of classical music. Born on August 23, 1970, in Cleveland, Ohio, Williamson grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a singer. Williamson started playing the clarinet at the age of 10 and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Williamson's early musical education was at the Cleveland Institute of Music, where he studied with Robert Marcellus, the principal clarinetist of the Cleveland Orchestra. After completing his studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music, Williamson went on to study at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he studied with Donald Montanaro. In 1993, Williamson joined the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra as the principal clarinetist, a position he held for 12 years. During his time with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Williamson performed in over 2,000 performances and was featured in numerous recordings. He also performed as a soloist with the orchestra, including a performance of Mozart's Clarinet Concerto in A Major. In 2005, Williamson left the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra to join the Chicago Symphony Orchestra as the principal clarinetist. He held this position until 2013 when he was appointed the principal clarinetist of the New York Philharmonic. Williamson has also performed as a guest principal clarinetist with the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. In addition to his work as a clarinetist, Williamson is also an accomplished conductor. He has conducted the New York Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, and the San Francisco Symphony, among others. Williamson has also served as the music director of the Illinois Symphony Orchestra and the Lake Forest Symphony. Throughout his career, Williamson has received numerous awards and accolades. In 1994, he was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which recognizes outstanding young musicians. He was also a recipient of the Gilmore Young Artist Award in 1996. In 2003, Williamson was awarded the Richard J. Bogomolny National Service Award by the Cleveland Orchestra for his contributions to the orchestra and the community. One of Williamson's most notable performances was his solo performance of Mozart's Clarinet Concerto in A Major with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in 2001. The performance was recorded and released on CD, receiving critical acclaim. Williamson's performance was praised for its technical precision and emotional depth. Another notable performance by Williamson was his performance of Aaron Copland's Clarinet Concerto with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 2007. The performance was part of a program that also included Copland's Appalachian Spring and Symphony No. 3. Williamson's performance was praised for its clarity and sensitivity.
