Ponç d'Ortafià was a Catalan composer who lived during the 14th century. Not much is known about his early life, but it is believed that he was born in the town of Ortafà, located in the province of Girona, Catalonia, Spain. Ortafià was a prolific composer who wrote a variety of works, including motets, chansons, and instrumental pieces. His music was heavily influenced by the Ars Nova style, which was popular in France during the 14th century. This style was characterized by complex rhythms, intricate harmonies, and the use of isorhythm, a technique in which a repeating rhythmic pattern is used throughout a piece. One of Ortafià's most famous works is his motet "O Maria, Deu maire" (Oh Mary, Mother of God). This piece is written in three voices and features a complex rhythmic structure, with each voice singing a different rhythm. The text of the motet is a prayer to the Virgin Mary, asking for her intercession and protection. Another notable work by Ortafià is his chanson "En la font del vergier" (In the Fountain of the Garden). This piece is written in two voices and features a lively, dance-like rhythm. The text of the chanson is a love poem, describing the beauty of a woman and the joy of being in her presence. Ortafià also wrote a number of instrumental pieces, including several estampies, which were popular dance forms in medieval Europe. One of his most famous estampies is "La douce sote" (The Sweet Sote), which features a lively, upbeat rhythm and intricate melodic lines.
