Born on May 12, 1932, in New York City, McCracken showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. His parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue his passion for music. McCracken's musical journey began when he enrolled in the Juilliard School of Music in New York City. He studied under some of the most prominent music teachers of the time, including Rosina Lhévinne, Sascha Gorodnitzki, and Adele Marcus. After completing his studies at Juilliard, McCracken began his professional career as a concert pianist. He made his debut performance at Carnegie Hall in 1955, which was a resounding success.
