Tiempo Libre is a Grammy-nominated Cuban music group that has been captivating audiences with their unique blend of classical music and Afro-Cuban rhythms since their formation in 2001. The group was founded by pianist Jorge Gomez, who had previously worked with legendary Cuban musicians such as Arturo Sandoval and Paquito D'Rivera. Born in Havana, Cuba, Gomez began playing the piano at the age of six and quickly developed a passion for music. He studied at the National School of Arts in Havana and later at the Superior Institute of Arts, where he honed his skills as a pianist and composer. After moving to the United States in the late 1990s, Gomez began collaborating with other Cuban musicians in Miami, which eventually led to the formation of Tiempo Libre. The group's name, which translates to "free time" in Spanish, reflects their mission to create music that is both entertaining and uplifting. Their music draws on a wide range of influences, including classical music, jazz, and traditional Cuban rhythms such as son, rumba, and timba. Tiempo Libre's debut album, "Arroz con Mango," was released in 2005 and received critical acclaim for its innovative fusion of classical and Cuban music. The album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album, and the group was invited to perform at the Latin Grammy Awards ceremony that year. Since then, Tiempo Libre has released several more albums, including "Lo Que Esperabas" (2007), "Bach in Havana" (2009), and "My Secret Radio" (2015). Their music has been featured in films such as "Dance with Me" and "Music of the Heart," and they have performed at prestigious venues such as the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall. One of the highlights of Tiempo Libre's career was their collaboration with the Cleveland Orchestra in 2011. The group was invited to perform with the orchestra at Severance Hall in Cleveland, Ohio, in a program that featured both classical and Cuban music. The concert was a huge success, and the group received a standing ovation from the audience. Tiempo Libre has also been recognized for their contributions to the arts. In 2008, they were awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to support their work in promoting Cuban music and culture. They have also been honored by the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) for their contributions to Latin music. Despite their success, Tiempo Libre remains committed to their mission of creating music that brings people together. They continue to tour extensively, performing at festivals and venues around the world. Their music has been described as "a celebration of life," and their infectious rhythms and joyful spirit have won them fans from all walks of life.
