Ludus Gravis is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1991 in Italy. The group is known for its unique approach to classical music, which combines traditional instruments with electronic sounds and experimental techniques. The founding members of Ludus Gravis were composer and pianist Fabrizio Paterlini, cellist Marco Decimo, and percussionist Andrea Bovo. The group's name, which means "heavy play" in Latin, reflects their commitment to exploring the weighty themes and emotions of classical music. Over the years, Ludus Gravis has expanded its membership to include a range of talented musicians, including violinist Luca Ciarla, clarinetist Gabriele Mirabassi, and guitarist Stefano Barone. The group's core members, however, remain Paterlini, Decimo, and Bovo. One of Ludus Gravis's most notable performances was their 2005 concert at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. The group performed a program of original compositions and arrangements, including Paterlini's "Fragments Found" and Decimo's "Cello Suite No. 1." The concert was well-received by both audiences and critics, and helped to establish Ludus Gravis as a major force in the classical music world. In addition to their live performances, Ludus Gravis has also released several albums over the years. Their debut album, "Ludus Gravis," was released in 1994 and featured a mix of original compositions and arrangements of classical works. The group's most recent album, "Adrift," was released in 2019 and features a more experimental sound, with electronic elements and ambient textures. Ludus Gravis has received numerous awards and accolades over the years, including the prestigious Premio Abbiati in 2006. The group was also named "Best Classical Group" at the 2010 Italian Music Awards. Despite their success, Ludus Gravis remains committed to pushing the boundaries of classical music and exploring new sounds and techniques. Their unique approach to the genre has earned them a dedicated following of fans and admirers, and they continue to inspire and challenge audiences around the world.
