Jonny Buckland is a British musician and composer, best known as the lead guitarist of the popular rock band Coldplay. Born on September 11, 1977, in Islington, London, Buckland grew up in a musical family and was exposed to a wide range of music from an early age. His father was a music teacher, and his mother was a choir singer, which helped to foster his love for music. Buckland began playing the guitar at the age of eleven and quickly developed a passion for it. He was inspired by a variety of guitarists, including Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and David Gilmour. He attended University College London, where he studied mathematics and astronomy, but his true passion remained music. In 1996, Buckland met Chris Martin, who would later become the lead singer of Coldplay, while they were both studying at University College London. The two quickly became friends and began playing music together. They formed a band called Pectoralz, which later became Coldplay, with the addition of Guy Berryman on bass and Will Champion on drums. Coldplay released their debut album, Parachutes, in 2000, which was a critical and commercial success. Buckland's guitar work on the album was praised for its melodic and atmospheric qualities. The album featured hit singles such as "Yellow" and "Trouble," which helped to establish Coldplay as one of the most popular bands of the early 2000s. Buckland's guitar work continued to be a defining feature of Coldplay's sound on their subsequent albums. Their second album, A Rush of Blood to the Head, released in 2002, featured more complex and intricate guitar work from Buckland. The album won several awards, including the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album. Coldplay's third album, X&Y, released in 2005, was another commercial success, featuring hit singles such as "Speed of Sound" and "Fix You." Buckland's guitar work on the album was praised for its use of effects and textures, which helped to create a unique and atmospheric sound. Buckland's guitar work continued to evolve on Coldplay's subsequent albums. Their fourth album, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, released in 2008, featured more experimental and diverse guitar work from Buckland. The album won several awards, including the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. Coldplay's fifth album, Mylo Xyloto, released in 2011, featured more electronic and dance influences, with Buckland's guitar work taking on a more rhythmic and percussive quality. The album was another commercial success, featuring hit singles such as "Paradise" and "Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall." Buckland's guitar work on Coldplay's sixth album, Ghost Stories, released in 2014, was more subdued and atmospheric, with a focus on creating a dreamy and ethereal sound. The album featured hit singles such as "Magic" and "A Sky Full of Stars." Coldplay's seventh album, A Head Full of Dreams, released in 2015, was a more upbeat and optimistic album, with Buckland's guitar work taking on a more prominent role. The album featured hit singles such as "Adventure of a Lifetime" and "Hymn for the Weekend." Buckland's guitar work on Coldplay's eighth album, Everyday Life, released in 2019, was more stripped-down and acoustic, with a focus on creating a more intimate and personal sound. The album featured hit singles such as "Orphans" and "Everyday Life." In addition to his work with Coldplay, Buckland has also collaborated with other artists and musicians.
