Constantin Regamey was a Swiss composer, pianist, and music educator who was born on August 28, 1907, in Lausanne, Switzerland. He was the son of a Swiss father and a French mother, and his family was musically inclined. Regamey began his musical education at a young age, studying piano with his mother and later with the renowned Swiss pianist Edwin Fischer. He also studied composition with the Swiss composer Frank Martin. Regamey's early compositions were influenced by the neoclassical style of Stravinsky and the Second Viennese School. In 1930, he won the Prix de Rome, which allowed him to study in Rome for two years. During this time, he was exposed to the music of Italian composers such as Respighi and Casella, which had a significant impact on his compositional style. Upon returning to Switzerland, Regamey began teaching at the Geneva Conservatory, where he remained for over 30 years. He also continued to compose, and his works were performed by leading orchestras and ensembles throughout Europe and the United States. Regamey's music is characterized by its clarity of form, rhythmic vitality, and use of traditional tonality. His works often incorporate elements of folk music, particularly from his native Switzerland. One of his most famous works is his Concerto for Piano and Orchestra, which was premiered in 1949 by the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. The concerto is notable for its virtuosic piano writing and its use of Swiss folk melodies. Another significant work by Regamey is his Symphony No. 2, which was premiered in 1955 by the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich. The symphony is in three movements and is notable for its use of polyrhythms and its incorporation of Swiss folk music. Regamey also wrote a number of chamber works, including a String Quartet and a Sonata for Violin and Piano. His chamber music is characterized by its contrapuntal writing and its use of traditional forms. In addition to his work as a composer and educator, Regamey was also a respected music critic. He wrote for several Swiss newspapers and was known for his insightful and thoughtful reviews. Regamey continued to compose and teach until his death in 1982. His legacy as a composer and educator continues to be celebrated in Switzerland and beyond. His music remains an important part of the Swiss classical music canon and is regularly performed by leading orchestras and ensembles.
