Julie Rogers was a British singer and actress who rose to fame in the 1960s with her hit song "The Wedding." Born on April 6, 1943, in Bermondsey, London, Rogers grew up in a musical family. Her father was a jazz musician, and her mother was a singer. Rogers began singing at a young age and was soon performing in local talent shows. In 1960, Rogers auditioned for the BBC television show "The Six-Five Special" and was selected to appear on the program. This led to more television appearances, including a spot on the popular show "Thank Your Lucky Stars." Rogers also began performing in clubs and theaters around London. In 1964, Rogers signed a recording contract with Philips Records. Her first single, "It's Magic," was a moderate success, but it was her second single, "The Wedding," that made her a star. The song, which was written by John Barry and Don Black, reached number three on the UK charts and became a hit around the world. Rogers' distinctive voice and emotional delivery made the song a classic. Rogers continued to record and perform throughout the 1960s, releasing several more singles and two albums. She also appeared in the film "The Family Way" and on television shows such as "The Benny Hill Show" and "The Morecambe and Wise Show." In 1970, Rogers took a break from music to focus on her acting career. She appeared in several stage productions, including "The Sound of Music" and "The King and I." She also appeared in the television series "The Onedin Line" and "The Professionals." In the 1980s, Rogers returned to music, performing in cabaret shows and recording new material. She also appeared in the West End production of "42nd Street." In 1991, she released a new album, "Julie Rogers Sings the Great Songs of the Carpenters," which featured her interpretations of songs by the popular American duo. Throughout her career, Rogers received several awards and honors. In 1965, she was named Best Female Singer at the New Musical Express Poll Winners' Concert. She also received a Gold Disc for "The Wedding" and was awarded the Carl-Alan Award for her contribution to the entertainment industry. Rogers continued to perform and record into the 2000s, and her music remained popular with fans around the world. She passed away on February 8, 2021, at the age of 77.
