Artist Info

Camerata Pro Musica is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1952 in Boston, Massachusetts. The group was established by a group of musicians who were passionate about performing chamber music and wanted to bring this genre to a wider audience. The founding members of Camerata Pro Musica included pianist and conductor Boris Goldovsky, violinist Joseph Silverstein, cellist Samuel Mayes, and flutist Doriot Anthony Dwyer. These musicians were all accomplished performers in their own right and had a shared vision of creating a chamber music ensemble that would showcase the beauty and complexity of this genre. Over the years, Camerata Pro Musica has had many different members, but the group has always maintained a commitment to excellence in performance and a dedication to the art of chamber music. Some of the most notable members of the ensemble have included violinist Malcolm Lowe, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and pianist Russell Sherman. One of the highlights of Camerata Pro Musica's early years was their performance at the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival. This was a groundbreaking event, as it was the first time that a classical music ensemble had been invited to perform at a jazz festival. The group's performance was well-received by the audience and helped to raise awareness of chamber music as a genre. In the years that followed, Camerata Pro Musica continued to perform at a variety of venues and events, including concerts at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. The group also began to record their performances, releasing several albums of chamber music over the years. One of the most significant moments in Camerata Pro Musica's history came in 1971, when the group was invited to perform at the White House for President Richard Nixon. This was a great honor for the ensemble and helped to cement their reputation as one of the premier chamber music groups in the United States. In addition to their many performances, Camerata Pro Musica has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 1963, the group was awarded the prestigious Peabody Award for their contributions to the field of classical music. They have also been recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts and have received grants from the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Despite the many changes that have taken place over the years, Camerata Pro Musica has remained committed to their mission of bringing the beauty and complexity of chamber music to audiences around the world. Today, the group continues to perform at a variety of venues and events, and their recordings are still enjoyed by classical music enthusiasts everywhere.
