Kathryn Lockwood is a renowned violist and chamber musician who has made a significant impact on the classical music scene. Born in 1971 in New York City, Lockwood grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to music from a young age. Her father was a composer and her mother was a pianist, and they encouraged her to pursue music as a career. Lockwood began playing the viola at the age of nine and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. She studied with Karen Tuttle, a renowned viola teacher, and went on to attend the Juilliard School, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree. She later received a Master of Music degree from the Yale School of Music. Throughout her career, Lockwood has been a passionate advocate for contemporary music and has worked closely with many composers to premiere new works for the viola. She has also been a member of several prominent chamber music ensembles, including the Lark Quartet and the Da Capo Chamber Players. One of the highlights of Lockwood's career was her performance at the 1994 Olympic Arts Festival in Lillehammer, Norway. She was invited to perform as a soloist with the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra, and her performance was widely praised for its technical brilliance and emotional depth. Lockwood has also been the recipient of numerous awards and honors throughout her career. In 1997, she was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, which recognizes outstanding young musicians who show exceptional promise for a career in classical music. She has also been a recipient of the Chamber Music America Residency Partnership Grant and the Fromm Music Foundation Commission. In addition to her work as a performer, Lockwood is also a dedicated teacher and has served on the faculty of several prestigious music schools, including the Manhattan School of Music and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She is currently a professor of viola at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Lockwood's discography includes several critically acclaimed recordings, including "The Lark Quartet Plays Haydn" and "The Lark Quartet Plays Philip Glass." She has also recorded several solo albums, including "Viola Spaces" and "Arches."
