She was the daughter of Mark Hambourg, a famous pianist, and his wife, Vera Hambourg, a talented violinist. Michal grew up in a musical family and was exposed to classical music from a very young age. Her father was her first piano teacher, and she showed great promise as a pianist from an early age. Michal's musical education began at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she studied under Tobias Matthay. She later continued her studies in Paris with Isidor Philipp and in Berlin with Artur Schnabel. Michal's talent as a pianist was recognized early on, and she won several awards and prizes for her performances. In 1914, at the age of 15, she won the prestigious Mendelssohn Scholarship, which allowed her to study in Berlin with Schnabel. Michal made her debut as a concert pianist in 1917, at the age of 18, at the Aeolian Hall in London. She received critical acclaim for her performance, and her career as a concert pianist took off. She went on to perform in major concert halls around the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Salle Pleyel in Paris. One of the highlights of Michal's career was her performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 with the London Symphony Orchestra in 1926. The performance was a huge success, and Michal received rave reviews for her interpretation of the piece. She went on to perform the concerto with several other orchestras around the world, cementing her reputation as one of the leading interpreters of Beethoven's music. Michal was also known for her performances of the music of Chopin. She recorded several of his works, including the complete set of his Nocturnes, which was released in 1938. Her recordings of Chopin's music are still considered some of the best interpretations of his work. In addition to her career as a concert pianist, Michal was also a respected teacher. She taught at the Royal Academy of Music in London and later at the Juilliard School in New York. Her students included several notable pianists, including John Ogdon and Peter Donohoe. Michal received several awards and honors throughout her career. In 1951, she was awarded the Order of the British Empire for her services to music. She was also made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1971. In 1972, she was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society, one of the highest honors in classical music. Michal continued to perform and teach until her death on June 22, 1987, at the age of 88. She left behind a legacy as one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, known for her technical skill, musicality, and interpretation of the works of Beethoven and Chopin.
