Plas Johnson is a renowned American saxophonist who has made significant contributions to the world of music. Born on July 21, 1931, in Donaldsonville, Louisiana, Johnson grew up in a musical family. His father was a pianist, and his mother was a singer, and they both encouraged him to pursue music from a young age. Johnson started playing the saxophone when he was just 11 years old. He was initially self-taught, but he later received formal training at the Conservatory of Music in New Orleans. He quickly developed a reputation as a talented musician and began playing professionally while still in his teens. In the early 1950s, Johnson moved to Los Angeles, where he quickly became a sought-after session musician. He played on countless recordings for artists such as Ray Charles, Johnny Otis, and B.B. King. He also played on the iconic theme song for the television show "The Pink Panther," which was composed by Henry Mancini. Johnson's smooth, soulful saxophone playing became a signature sound in the world of jazz and R&B. He was known for his ability to play both tenor and alto saxophone with equal skill, and his improvisational style was highly regarded by his peers. In addition to his work as a session musician, Johnson also released several albums as a solo artist. His 1959 album "This Must Be Plas" was a critical and commercial success, and it helped establish him as a leading figure in the world of jazz. Over the course of his career, Johnson has received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to music. In 2007, he was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame, and in 2010, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Jazz Education Network. Despite his many accomplishments, Johnson remains humble and dedicated to his craft. He continues to perform and record music to this day, and his influence on the world of jazz and R&B is undeniable.
